Celebrity Siting in PVD

July 24, 2008

Now that I have a new part-time job in Providence, I take the bus to and from work. Taking the bus is always an adventure, however, Monday’s trip home was extra interesting. I was waiting for the bus about 1:15pm when a tall, thin, African-American man came up to me and asked me if I knew which stop he should get off in order to get to Pawtucket Memorial Hospital. Now seeing that the part of my brain responsible for geography and giving directions is slightly impaired, I, unfortunately, could not provide this man with an answer. So, I politely told him that I wasn’t very familiar with Pawtucket, which is technically not a lie. (Editor’s note: My reluctance to even give him directions was spurred by the fact that just last week a nice woman asked me how to get to the Salvation Army on Pitman Street and I, of course, accidentally gave her the wrong directions and sent her down Waterman Avenue instead. I really am a dope when it comes to maps, streets and knowing my lefts from my rights. Taylor gets very frustrated that I still don’t know my left from my right. Oh, well. I’m blaming genetics.)

Anyway, the bus came and we all boarded. The tall, African-American man ended up sitting just two people away from me. Now being the nosy person that I am, I began to listen in on his conversation with another man. He was talking about how he was getting a royalty from L.A. check because his show aired the other night. Hmm. This seemed rather interesting, so I continued to listen. He went on to say that he was the first African-American actor on Laverne & Shirley, had played Nell Carter’s ex-husband on Gimme A Break for a few episodes and was on Good Times for an entire season. Now, if you’ve ever been to Kennedy Plaza in Providence, you know that some of the patrons can be quite eccentric. So, although I thought what this man was saying was interesting, I wasn’t sure how much of it to believe. As soon as I got home, I looked him up online. As it turns out, he was telling the truth. Although he has aged since the 80s, his voice is very distinctive and I recognized it the minute I turned up the volume. The man’s name is Ben Powers and he was an actor in the 1980s. He really did appear on Laverne and Shirley, Gimme A Break and Good Times. He also appeared on Laugh In and did a couple of movies. Long story short, he got into drugs and eventually got sick with liver cancer. According to the message boards that I was able to hunt down about him, he now lives in Providence with his mother and sister. I’ve yet to see him on the bus since, but the next time I do, I think I’m going to acknowledge him and his former work. I’ve posted a couple of youtube clips below. He was quite funny, it’s too bad that external circumstances got the best of him. So without further adieu, here is my Ben Powers tribute:

Block Island 2008 Recap

July 22, 2008

It took us four years, three jam-packed automobiles, two cats and a one-hour ferry ride to get back to Block Island. Our trip was definitely a memorable one to say the least. It began in the wee hours of a soggy, foggy morning on July 5th and ended on a sunny, fun-filled day (at least for some of us) on July 12th. Although Taylor and I had to return home on Sunday afternoon to find the cats and secure our home (some idiots decided to break into our condo and rob us on our first night there), we managed to salvage what was left of the trip and have a good time, cats in tow (I just couldn’t leave them at home after all they’d been through).

Some of the highlights from our trip included:

Scrabble (Taylor and Scott involved in yet another heated game):

Volleyball:

Enjoying the sunsets (we did get to enjoy a couple of them):

Karaoke (The boyz showing off their respective talents):

Visiting the northern most tip of the island (that’s a Gatorade bottle in my front pocket, not my new baby fat):

And lounging around (which was the best part of the trip apart from the ice cream):

(Even Piccadilly managed to adapt to island life fairly quickly after being lost in our condo building for about 10 hours.)

I’ll add more photos of our trip to the picture gallery once I get it up and running. In the meantime, you have the highlights to hold you over!

Onto baby news…

I’m currently in my 18th week. OMG. I’m only up about five pounds (I guess I should have eaten more ice cream while on vacation!) and feeling pretty good. We find out if we’re having a little Jenn or a little Taylor in exactly a week. Yeah! As long as the baby is willing to cooperate, I’ll be posting an update and ultrasound photo next week. Stay tuned…

Goodbye First Trimester, Hello Second!

July 1, 2008

We officially entered the second trimester last week at 13 weeks and 3 days. Today marks 14 weeks and 2 days. Yeah! I had my 14 week appointment today and everything was fine. The baby is growing and his/her heartbeat was nice and strong. My next appointment is in four weeks on July 29th when we’ll find out the baby’s sex. Hopefully s/he is cooperative and shows us the goods (or lack thereof). I’ve had three dreams that the baby is a girl. So, we’ll see how good my mother’s intuition is in about a month.

Now that the first trimester is over, I’m finally able to enjoy being pregnant. And boy, let me tell you, what they tell you about the first tri is true. Here are a few things that I learned during my first three months of pregnancy:

1. You haven’t experienced true fatigue until you’re pregnant. I can’t tell you how tired I was (and still am). It’s truly impossible for me to keep my eyes open past 10:30. And at about 9pm or so, I start yawning uncontrollably! Ugh! Poor Taylor, I’ve fallen asleep on him during more movies and tv shows than I can count. Time to give up my night owl post I guess!

2. Food really does taste different! Before I was pregnant, I lived on salads and chicken. I had no taste for chicken in the first trimester and really had to force my salad down on more than one occasion. Apparently, baby likes cheeseburgers (thank goodness it’s grilling season!), ice cream, chips (new favorite: Lays Southwestern Cheddar and Jalapeno), anything with tomato sauce, chocolate and all kinds of fruit. I’m going to have to work really hard at keeping my food consumption in check or else I’m going to gain 100 pounds. Thankfully, as of today, I’ve only gained two. I guess I still have some time to lay off the burgers and chips…

3. I don’t miss cleaning out the litter boxes (thankfully, Taylor has been granted this lovely task until the end of the year), but I do desperately miss my deli turkey and kind of miss my white wine. I’ve been eating my turkey subs sans the turkey (just cheese and veggies) and never wanted a nice, cold, fruity coctail more than right now. Truth be told, I’m not a big drinker, but it’s the fact that I can’t have any alcohol that’s hard to get used to. I just keep telling myself that I can probably have a glass or two during the third trimester, but it’s the social aspect of drinking that I’m missing more than anything else right now. Being pregnant at this time of the year somehow reminds me of the summer before my senior year of college when it seemed liked everyone but me was 21. Hmpf. Designated driverhood here I come!

Ok, enough rambling. I just wanted to get in one good-sized posting before we leave for our one-week vacation on Block Island this weekend! Yippie! I’ll post some pix of all the wackiness that I’m anticipating is going to ensure when we get back. In the meantime, I’ll leave you with an ultrasound photo of Baby H. This was taken about 2.5 weeks ago. His/her head is on the left (such a cute profile!) and body is on the right. At that point in time, baby was 2 inches long.

Baby Henshall at 11 weeks. (Head is on left, body on right).

Have a Happy 4th! Be back after vacay!
